What is a Rubik's Cube made of?
The Rubik's Cube is made of plastic parts. Those parts interlock between each piece.
The Rubik’s cube consists of 54 colored stickers on its parts. There are only 6 sides and six colors. 9 stickers per side. Each side is a square with 3x3 stickers. Each side is a plane. The sides of the cube rotate around 3 internal axes. The colors of the classic Rubik’s cube are as follows (opposite colors are indicated): red - orange, white - yellow, blue - green. Each part of the cube is unique “cube” with 1, 2 or 3 colored stickers.
The elements of the Rubik’s cube are of three types.
The center cubies (center pieces on each side). This element is the cube with only one colored surface (sticker). This is the base of the cube side. These central pieces have a rigidly fixed spatial position relative to other central elements. And they cannot be moved in any way other than breaking the puzzle. There are 6 parts in total.
The edge cubies (pieces). This item has two different colored surfaces (stickers). They are located on the edges of the cube (which is logical and follows from the name). Each Rubik’s cube side has 4 such elements. They make up an equilateral cross. In the middle of this cross is the center of the side. These elements move around the cube during the solving. There are 12 parts in total.
The corner cubies (pieces). This item has three different colored surfaces (stickers). They are located on the corners of the cube. These elements also move around the cube during the solving. There are 8 parts in total.
The center elements connect to form a centerpiece of a 3D cross that holds the center cubes together.
So, the Rubik's cube include 26 pieces (unique "cubies") that connect with each other. These pieces have 54 colored surfaces (or stickers). You can see all these elements in the picture below.
Some speedcubies also have magnets installed. These magnets help the Rubik’s cube twist on its own. But it is not necessary. Especially for beginners.
